Beit Scholar Dennis Mazingi Wins Best Presentation Prize at BAPS 70th Anniversary Congress

Beit Scholar Dennis Mazingi, a DPhil student in Global Surgery at the University of Oxford, has been awarded the prestigious David Lloyd Global Papers Prize at the 70th Anniversary Congress of the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons (BAPS). The event took place in Sheffield from 2-5 July 2024.
Dennis won the prize for his presentation of a “Systematic Review of Children’s Surgical Volume and Variety Comparing DGHs in LMICs and HICs.” This research provides critical insights into the differences in paediatric surgical care between district general hospitals (DGHs) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and high-income countries (HICs). This work highlights the unfortunate disparities in surgical care access and is Dennis’s raison d’être, which is to reverse these disparities especially in his home country in Zimbabwe. Under the mentorship of Professor Kokila Lakhoo, Professor Ashok Handa and Mr. Noel Peter, Dennis has made significant strides in the field of global paediatric surgery. His win at BAPS underscores the importance of his and the team’s contributions to improving surgical care for children worldwide.
